唐朝的贾岛是著名的苦吟派诗人。什么叫苦吟派呢？就是为了一句诗或是诗中的一个词，不惜耗费心血，花费工夫。贾岛曾用几年时刻做了一首诗。诗成之后，他热泪横流，不仅仅是高兴，也是心疼自己。当然他并不是每做一首都这么费劲儿，如果那样，他就成不了诗人了。
有一次，贾岛骑着毛驴在长安朱雀大街上走。那时正是深秋时分，金风一吹，落叶飘飘，那景色特别迷人。南岛一高兴，吟出一句”落叶满长安”来。但一琢磨，这是下一句，还得有个上句才行。他就苦思冥想起来了，一边骑驴往前走，一边念念叨叨。对面有个官员过来，不住地鸣锣开道。那锣敲得山响，贾岛愣是没听见。那官员不是别人，正是京兆尹，用今天的职务来说就是长安市市长。他叫刘栖楚，见贾岛闯了过来，非常生气。贾岛忽然来了灵感，大叫一声：“秋风生渭水。”刘栖楚吓了一跳，以为他是个疯子，叫人把他抓了起来，关了一夜。贾岛虽然吃了不少苦头，却吟成了一首诗《忆江上吴处士》：
“闽国扬帆去，蟾蜍亏复圆。
秋风生渭水，落叶满长安。
此处聚会夕，当时雷雨寒。
兰猱桡未返，消息海云端。”
贾岛吃了一回亏，还是不长记性。没过多久，他又一次骑驴闯了官道。他正琢磨着一句诗，那就是“僧推月下门””。可他又觉着推不太合适，不如敲好。嘴里就推敲推敲地念叨着。不知不觉地，就骑着驴闯进了大官韩愈的仪仗队里。
韩愈比刘栖楚有涵养，他问贾岛为什么乱闯。贾岛就把自己做了一首诗，然而其中一句拿不定主意是用“推”好，还是用“”敲”好的事说了一遍。韩愈听了，哈哈大笑，对贾岛说：“我看还是用‘敲’好，万一门是关着的，推怎么能推开呢？再者去别人家，又是晚上，还是敲门有礼貌呀！”贾岛听了连连点头。他这回不但没受处罚，还各韩愈交上了朋友。
推敲从此也就成了为了脍炙人口的常用词，用来比喻做文章或做事时，反复琢磨，反复斟酌。
